Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research comprises two overlapping and inter-dependent states. Topic A (12 months) will identify a consistent methodology of ground motion record correction, for the specific purposes of the project. Ensembles of records will be selected from seismic databases, corrected and grouped according to key parameters. There will also be a focused study of recordings from epicentral regions, to identify damaging long-period pulses. Topic A will be completed by the computation of statistically based elastic displacement response spectra, in codified form. Topic B (24 months) will select a group of representative structures (frames, walls, base-isolated systems) for the purposes of seismic dynamic analyses; these will be designed by conventional code strength-based approaches. The response characteristics of these systems to selected key records from the earthquake ensemble will be analysed, including compution of damage indices. The project will then develop a detailed displacement-based design (DBD) methodology and apply this to the analysed systems. Finally the DBD approach will be evaluated and validated by comparing the predicted performance with dynamic responses, and by comparison with conventional strength-based design according to EC8 and US codes.
