Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is to exploit helium films adsorbed on graphite as a laboratory for two dimensional physics. Solid 3He monolayers allow the study of 2D spin 1/2 quantum magnets on a triangular lattice, with tunable frustration. Here the objective is to study the critical behaviour with a view to inferring the ground state order, using heat capacity, NMR and low field SQUID NMR techniques to below 1mK. Evidence from earlier NMR measurements on 2D isotopic solid solutions for Fermi degeneracy in a solid will be followed up by combined heat capacity/NMR measurements to further probe the heavy quasiparticle-like tunnelling excitations (impuritons) and to examine the possibility of a finite solubility of 3He in 2D solid 4He. 2D fluid 3He adsorbed on various substrates will be investigated to understand the quasiparticle interactions and possible instabilities, in different surface density regimes, to a Cooper-paired of bipolaron (dimer) superfluid condensate. The superfluidity of atomically layered 4He films, as a function of surface binding potential, and the interfacial friction of surface monolayers as a function of their phase, will be studied using torsional oscillators.
