Summary on Grant Application Form
Using free-radical techniques, fluorinated alkenes will be grafted, multiply, onto the backbone of various polyethers, giving a range of novel highly fluorinated polyethers. These are soluble in hydrocarbon polymer systems but undergo surface segregation, giving a fluorinated, surface, at little cost. These surfaces will withstand further direct fluorination, to give a thin coating of a highly fluorinated surface that will be chemically bound to the hydrocarbon substrate, via the fluorination process, or by co-polymerisation techniques.
