This proposal aims to investigate the properties of charge-density waves in perovskite superconductors such as Ba (1-x) K (x) BiO (3) and BaPb (1-x) Bi (x) O3 and the doped series Ba (1-x-y) La (y) K (x) BiO (3) and Ba (1-x) K (x) Bi (1-y) Tl (y) O (3). We propose to undertake detailed high resolution X-ray scattering studies using synchrotron radiation on the X22C diffractometer at the NSLS. These experiments will measure the intensity, halfwidth and wavevector of the CDW satellites as a function of the composition, temperature and magnetic field. We will be collaborating with Drs J Hill and D Gibbs who have considerable experience in similar studies on other materials are world experts in magnetic X-ray scattering. Such studies will require the high intensity, high wavevector resolution and tuneability afforded by synchrotron radiation. The facilities required are not currently available at either the SRS or the ESRF.
