Summary on Grant Application Form |
SPM cantilevers will be functionalised by first, costings with a thin layer of gold and second, the adsorption of a self-assembled monolayer of alkyl thiols functionalised with methyl, hydroxyl and carboxylic acid tall groups. The interaction (adhesion) forces between functionalised tips and a variety of surfaces will be measured (including single- and mixed-component SAMs). Photopatterned SAMs will be imaged to evaluate the utility of the functionalised probe as a local adhesion probe (LAP). Interaction forces between the LAP and plasma-treated polymers will be explored, and plasma-patterned polymers (prepared by using a mask during treatment) will be examined.
