To apply and extend recent nonlinear mathematics to understand the mechanics of spatial localization in the buckling and post-buckling of rods and related structural forms. The mathematics includes (a) geometrical concepts and techniques of dynamical systems theory, using the static/dynamic analogy (b) general results of Hamiltonian bifurcation theory governing the existence of an infinite number of localized homoclinic solutions (c) analytical methods to explore perturbations of integrable solutions (d) new shooting techniques for homoclinic orbits (e) topological results, developed for DNA studies, concerning linking, twisting and writhing numbers. Particular attention will be given to the archetypal spatial localization exhibited by stretched and twisted rods. The theoretical work on rods, backed up by careful small-scale experiments, will have important practical applications in marine technology. It will help to understand and prevent the failure of marine cables, pipelines and drill-strings due to kinking and writhing.
