Summary on Grant Application Form |
Nano-scale solids, in particular semiconductors, are of profound interest. They will form the future building blocks of semiconductor technology and offer exciting potential for new functionality in single electron devices, optoelectronics and sensors. Currently the methods of experimental physics are severely taxed in their ability to elucidate the electronic structure of such solids. This application is aimed at generating novel ways to measure individual nano-scale solids and to gather information on critical aspects of their electronic structure. By radically enhancing the approach to measurement in this way, experimental physics can be expected to contribute significantly to this key area.
