Summary on Grant Application Form |
Cholesteric liquid crystals have recently become more important for use in displays, as improved polarisers and in colour displays. Detailed modelling is to be carried out to fully understand the optical properties of the film. The polarisers are made from choleristic liquid crystal polymer, with a variable pitch. Choleristic gel displays have slightly variable pitch orientation. The modelling will allow the exact structure of the films to be elucidated and to suggest improvements. In addition, the optical properties, particularly the angular behaviour, are important in optimising the backlight and diffuser to be used with the display.
