Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme will focus on the physics of long-wave VCSEL operation, with the objective of enabling future device design and optimisation. The specific targets to be addressed are (1) to develop a detailed understanding of the temperature dependence of threshold current, (2) to investigate the dependence of spontaneous emission factor on temperature and other device parameters, including the extent to which microactivity affects play a role, and (3) to assess the potential of novel materials (specifically Bragg reflector stacks using antimonides) for improved performance and manufacturing tolerance. The properties of 1.55 ?m VCSEl devices, supplied by BT Laboratories, will be measured at Essex using temperature as the variable parameter. Electrical and optical properties of antimonide materials (also supplied by Bt laboratories) will be measured. Detailed theoretical modelling of the device behaviour will be performed in close association with the experimental measurements, and the combined theoretical and experimental expertise which will be deployed is a significant feature of this research proposal.
