CFD is increasingly employed in compartment fire simulation as part of safety assessment. Fire growth and toxic emissions prediction is particularly complex under ventilation-controlled conditions which approach near-limit burning. Present methods are wholly empirical and no database exists to support theoretical model development at the level of detail appropriate to CFD validation. The programme comprises a comprehensive measurement campaign in well-defined turbulent flames, burning in a confined jet flame rig which permits regulation of the ambient vitiation level, and combustor model development which focuses in particular on toxic CO and smoke production in such flames. The models will explore flamelet-based and conditional moment closures in flames ranging from momentum - to buoyancy-controlled turbulent burning. The models developed will be applied to a typical large-scale compartment fire.
