Summary on Grant Application Form
Small and medium sized diesel engines still provide an effiecient method for producing powers below 5MW; many engines in this size range are turbocharged and this application focuses on the design of such engines. Computer programs exist for the engine design but they still exhibit a number of weaknesses, particularly when dealing with the exhaust systems and tubines in turbocharged engines; this is especially true for manifolds with complex junctions. New methods, based on both one- and multi- dimensional approaches have been developed for calculating the unsteady gas flow in engine manifolds and these will be applied to the 1MW medium speed engine which has been provided by GEC-Ruston Diesels. This engine will be fully instrumented and will provide experimental results for validation of the computer programs to be developed; these programs will be applicable to the whole spectrum of diesel and spark-ignition engine design.
