Summary on Grant Application Form |
The incorporation of strain into quantum well structures has lead to record breaking performance of semi conductor lasers over a wide range of emission wavelengths. However, the application of strained - layer technology to other key optoelectronic components, such as amplifiers, modulators and switches, only began very recently, but has already shown considerable promise. It is our aim to extend our expertise in the theoretical and experimental investigation of strined-layer lasers to encompass these new areas. We will study new designs of quantum well structures which contain complex strain and composition profiles for application to optical modulators. Also a novel transition mechanism for generating light in laser and amplifier structures using the extra flexibility in the spatial location of electrons and holes offered by strained structures will be investigated. In addition, throughout this programme we will be contiuouly developing and upgrading our computer models to simulate the performance of these advanced devices.
