This joint research program brings together expertise in paper process control and paper chemistry in the Department of Paper Science at UMIST, and neutral network, statistical modelling and model based process conrol at Newcastle. The aim is to develop modelling, statistical performance monitoring and supervisory control approaches focusing on the fundamental understanding and control of wet-end chemistry effects in paper production.This is an unexplored and strategically important area of the paper manufacturing process. The work is expected to lead to an increase in the efficiency of the wet-end process chemistry and provide for improved paper quality and paper properties, coupled with a reduction in chemical contamination of the effluent discharge. The work will consist of the development of first principle mathematical models, the establishement of statistical models and the further development of dynamic neural network representations. In addition, a multivariate statistical performance monitoring system (MSPC) will be developed and applied to paper machines. Hybrid models will be developed based on the harmonious integration of first principles, statisitical and neural network models. Supervisory model-based control strategies will be validated on the UMIST pilot plant through intensive trials.
