Compact heat exchangers with channel cross-sectional dimensions of around 2mm have great potential for applications to boiling of pure fluids and mixtures in chemical processing, refrigeration and cooling of electronic devices. The experimental data for flow boiling in such arrow channels are very limited, particularly for mixtures. The objective of this work is to develop design methods based on an understanding of the physical processes, which differ from boiling in large tubes. Flow boiling will be studied in a single electrically heated channel of rectangular cross-section 2mm x 1mm with a window on one side. Bubble motion and the consequent local variations in wall temperature will be measured by high speed video recording with liquid crystal thermography, together with local pressure variations measured by miniature transducers. The experiments will start with water, then progress to hydrocarbon mixtures. Nucleate boiling and the possibly chaotic processes associated with it will also be studied in pool boiling experiments. The physical understanding from all the experiments will be incorporated in computer models that will include the effects of the heat exchanger material and geometry.
