Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this work photothermal and beam deflection techniques will be developed further to allow the direct measurement of chemical species in the interfacial regions between solids and solutions. Furthermore the magnitude of concentration gradients will be determined to elucidate two systems of generic interest/ The first will be a membrane cell in which diffusion into the interfacial region will be monitored directly and the second systems will be a copper electrochemical cell in which electrode reactions in the electrode electrolyte interface will be elucidated from both concentration measurements and thermal lens spectrometric measurements to provide chemical selectivity. The work will be divided into three phases the first in which beam deflection and measurements including construction of the relevant membrane and electrochemical cells. The second phase will be to validate existing models developed for these techniques and to test their validity in the systems of interest. The third phase will consist of practical measurements of determine the required concentration gradients, diffusion coefficients and reaction schemes to demonstrate in principle the practical utility of this type of measurement.Key Words: Interfacial, Membranes, Photothermal, Spectrometry, Polymers, Lasers, Surfaces, Instrumentation.
