Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of the work outlined in this proposal is to develop a parallel 3D curvilinear free surface Large Eddy Simulation (LES) code. This will form an important and necessary extension of the free surface LES work that has been carried out at QMW over the last 9 years, and of work on LES in curvilinear co-ordinates carried out at the University of Surrey since 1991.The investigators propose to modify the QMW free surface LES code FRECCLES, which works within a cartesian framework only but has excellent wave conservation properties, so that it can be used for a much wider range of problems. During the grant period, a 3D curvilinear code will be developed that can simulate, on a parallel computer, turbulent flow with a free surface. Using the developed code, the investigators will carry out sloshing and progressive wave tests, and wave tests, and will simulate viscous and turbulent flows in order to verify its correct working and to investigate its accuracy.
