Summary on Grant Application Form |
The controlled interaction of prepared states in atomic and molecular collisions is an exciting field of study with applications in plasma etching, materials processing and atmospheric chemistry whilst also being of intrinsic fundamental interest. Laser radiation will be used to manipulate, control and analyse electron collisions with individual molecules in specific laser quantum states. In the new research programme, LIF and REMPI studies will be used to study state-to-state electron impact collision cross sections. A molecule will be prepared in some initial state ABC prior to collision with the electron, the products of the collision (ABC*, AB* and C*) produced by direct or dissociative excitation being subsequently analysed for rotational and vibrational populations.
