Summary on Grant Application Form |
Bioceramic coated metallic implants are finding widespread use because of their ability to bond chemically to bone and their potential superior load distribution properties. These advantages however, cannot be fully utilised if the chemical and mechanical stability of the bioceramic coating and especially the strength of the interface between the coating and the metal substrate are not fully characterised. It is a widely held view that existing characterisation techniques are not well established. It is proposed here that ultrasonic techniques are investigated for examining some key characteristics of bioceramic coatings on metal substrates. These characteristics are the condition of the interface between the coating and the substrate, the mechanical properties (elastic constants) of the bioceramic deposited using different coating processes and the dissolution characteristics of the coating. The application of ultrasound to this problem will be novel and it will have some significant advantages over existing methods. These will be the ability to examine the interface and the mechanical condition of the coating locally and the ability to monitor the change in the physical properties of the coating in simulated in vivo conditions. Also being a nondestructive method of examination, the same samples could be used for further testing using other methods.
