Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of this proposal is to investigate the applicability of the IUE to image processing problems of interest to the Medical Image processing community. In particular, we will investigate the efficiency and ease of use of the IUE in dealing with n-dimensional data, especially three spatial dimensions and one scale space dimension. Secondly, we will assess the polymorphic versatility of the IUE in combining conventional graphics systems based on polygonal and spline representations with such high dimensional image representations. Three key, characteristic medical image processing applications will be converted into the IUE framework: volume rendering, anisotropic scale space diffusion, and scale space and statistical snakes. Particular attention will be made between currently working programs and their implementations within the IUE. Esae of programming, expected robustness and code reusability will also be assessed with the aim of suggesting the basis for a Medical Image Processing and Understand Environment (MIPUE). Developed classes and programs implemented within the IUE will be made freely available.
