Summary on Grant Application Form
We will develop an active object environment for information resources, based upon the Java language and the World Wide Web, including a scripting language for retrieval. Within the environment we shall determine which are the appropriate measures and abstractions to represent the heterogeneous networks available. We shall investigate how best to model the generic application protocols that will use the object specific methods that control the representation of the object - such as type and degree of compression, and transformations from speech to text, and language - to provide the best display of the resource given the available display and network bandwidth. Included in this work will be an examination of application specific caching and pre-fetch, and the extension to real-time and multicast streams. We shall investigate what abstractions should be presented to the information resource author in manipulating the protocols, and how to show the effect variable network bandwidth has upon its display by enhancing existing tools.
