At present, planar lithium niobate acoustic transducers used in the acousto-optics industry emit plane acoustic waves. This severely limits the performance of the resulting Bragg cells, deflectors and tuneable filters. We propose to investigate the use of domain inverted patterns in piezoelectric transducers to synthesis complex acoustic wave fields in crystals and so allow construction of ultra-high performance acousto-optic devices which we cannot build using existing technology. Acoustic waves from adjacent domain inverted regions are 180 out of phase allowing the construction of Fresnel zone sources. The ability to control the focusing in two transverse directions, to apodise the beams with the same technique while still using planar transducers, is a revolutionary step. We intend constructing domain reversal equipment and a Schlieren camera system for visualisation of acoustic fields, together with a number of high-performance acousto-optic components to demonstrate the technique. In order to realise the full potential of these devices, we will research into the optimisation of electrical matching circuitry and the use of staple mechanical matching layers between the transducer and crystal substrate.
