Recent experimental and theoretical developments in the deformation and annealing of metals show that it is possible to produce grain sizes some 5-10 times smaller than in conventionally processed alloys. Such microstructures, if produced in sheet materials, are potentially of great industrial importance. Using continuos recrystallization of Al-Mg alloys and a combination of controlled rolling and continuous recrystallisation in steels, the conditions for forming very small grains during rolling or plane strain compression simulation, will be investigated. Detailed characterisation of the materials will be undertaken, and modelling of the physical metallurgy of the processes will be carried out. In parallel, we will extend our preliminary work on a novel forming process equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE), a redundant work technique, which is capable of producing grain sizes in the 100-400nm range. The properties of very fine grained alloys are not well known and the strength, ductility and formability of the fine-grained materials will be complemented by theoretical investigations into microstructure development and stability. A significant amount of work will be carried out at Alcan and British Steel.
