Summary on Grant Application Form
Experiments to be conducted: - (I) Filament wound GRE pipes will be exposed to simulated process conditions, water at 65C and 10 bar pressures and two different types of biaxial loading (SR = 2:1 and 1:0) for periods of up to 10,000hr (14 months) and then will be tested to determine their residual leakage and burst pressures at 65C. This will stimulate the performance of the pipework in an imaginary plant.(II) ASTM D2992 type creep tests will be carried out at 65C over the same periods to test the difference between creep results and simulated plant performance. The test temperature and the type of pressure loading will comply with the UKOOA recommendations. (III) Accelerated testing at 10bar, 95C for shorter times (less than 1000hrs) to give the same diffusion states as in the 65C conditioning tests. The pipes will be cooled and tested at 65C.The experiments will be monitored using ultrasonic NDT methods. Theory will be developed for predicting the diffusion of water into the walls of GRE tubes at different temperatures: for relating progressive moisture absorption to loss of strength under the service conditions and for interpreting the results from accelerated tests at elevated temperatures.
