Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to extend our previous work in super-revolving scanning microscopy in the area of high-density (superdense) optical data storage. Our aim is to design, construct and test a prototype optical disc reader with optical resolution close to twice the Rayleigh criterion, using superresolving image-plane masks. The design of such masks will follow from a detailed singular systems analysis of the imaging equations for the theoretical design will then be established and tested numerically by computer simulation of the forward imaging problem. Master masks will be manufactured by ion-beam milling of silica flats. A prototype of the superdense optical reader will be constructed building on the superresolving incoherent scanning microscope we have already operating in the laboratory. It will be tested using high-density storage media samples fabricated by electron beam lithography.
