Summary on Grant Application Form |
In an optically-induced lattice atoms are trapped, from a disordered gas on a regular array through their interaction with a near-reasonant light field. The resulting atomic distribution is analogous to those found in solid-state crystalline media allowing concepts from condensed matter physics to be applied in an entirely new domain of length-scale and temparature and interaction strength. The analogy with solid-state crystalline medio will be explored for a variety of periodic and quasi-periodic light-induced structures, particularly where insights might be gained into properties of technologically important materials as yet poorly understood. Novel lattice configurations will be employed to enhance the atomic localisation and reduce the number of defects in the optically-bound crystals. The propagtion of light in these media is greatly modified by te long-range spatial order, the extreme localization and low temperatre of the traped atoms and will be investigated. Potential technological applcations for example in lithgraphy will be studied. This is a new field of study, in which there is yet no British research effot, but of which the importance has been regognised by some of Britain's major competitors.
