Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal aims to provide a new, low temperature, technology for the preparation of CdS/CdTe photovoltaic solar cells that will improve solar conversion efficiency to 20%. This will be achieved by developing new organometallic precursors based on dihydrotellurophene and dihydrothiophene for Te and S respectively, designed for growth at 200 (degree C) onto coated glass substrates. Additional surface stimulation from visible light irradiation will be used to improve efficiency and film quality. The complete photovotaic structure, including doping will be grown within the MOCVD reactor and will eliminate the need for high temperature annealing, used with conventional photovoltaic manufacture, that can lead to the formation of heterojunction barriers and diffusion of impurities.Attention will be paid to the scaling of this technology and the potential for a low cost route to manufacture efficient thin film photovoltaics.
