|
The main theme of the proposed programme is the volume dependent nature of the magnetism of metals. The importance of these effects was well demonstrated by Coey who showed that the expansion of the lattice of SM2Fe17 by N lead to the permanent magnet materials SM2Fe17N3. We are currently studying N site occupancy and diffusion rates in this material, and their influence on the local Sm anisotropy, and propose to extend the programme to related materials such as NdFe11TiNx and Nd2Fe14B. The valence of Mn in the giant magnetoresistance materials such as La-Sr-Mn03 can be investigated by NMR as can structural changes and the nature of defects in the lattice, eg a preliminary investigation has found Mn2+ ions where only Mn3+ and Mn4+ were thought to exist.A more fundamental problem is the competition between the Kondo effect and magnetism in materials such as CePt and CePtSb which is again volume sensitive.The itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn2 is paramagnetic at pressures above 9.6kbar and shows non-Fermi-liquid behaviour. Knight shift and relaxation time measurements at 10kbar are planned.
