Summary on Grant Application Form |
C3N4 is predicted to be a very hard solid, with a hardness similar to diamond. Carbon nitride films will be deposited by a combined vacuum arc/plasma beam source apparatus and by reactive sputtering. These techniques allow a wide range of control of the ion fluxes and ion energies to create the possible C3N4 phase and to engineer the bonding in amorphous Cnx phases. The sp3/sp2 binding ratio in the resulting films will be characterised by EELS and correlated to the measured mechanical properties. The films prepared by sputtering are amorphous and possess a unusually high elastic recovery and have potential as a low friction material for coating magnetic hard discs, biomedical implants and as a buffer layer for CVD diamond films. A detailed study of the mechanical, wear, friction and haemocompatibility properties of the films will be carried out as a function of deposition conditions.
