Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is based on the experience we have built up in Durham over the past 3 years in creating a unique low temperature environment for 10 K diffraction studies. We propose to extend this work to a newly designed helium cooling device which will allow us to carry out research we find difficult or impossible with the current iclosed cycle, closed sample chamber Displex. We have plans to create a device which will be mounted in the first instance on a 3 circle diffractometer equipped with a CCD detector and which will allow unrestricted access to and visibility of, the samples. The device will be tested against previously determined low temperature data sets for bench-marking and thereafter new materials will be studied (see Case). The device is flexible enough to allow crystallisation of samples at any temperature below room temperature and subsequently to cool these down to 30 K for detailed studies. Techniques for this work need to be optimised off-line. The open access aspect of the device allows the use of ancillary equipment such as lasers for specific, eg photochemical applications.
