Vibrations generated by pile driving, by both impact hammer and vibro-driver, are transmitted through the ground into adjacent buildings and buried services. The form of the surface vibrations is now well known because of programmes of recordings on sites. However, these wave forms have not been modelled computationally, although simple empirical equations have been proposed to describe their attenuation. Recently, two computational techniques have been developed which are well-suited to this problem: infinite elements, and the quiet boundary in F.E. The first major objective is to use both methods, infinite elements in Fortran code and quiet boundaries within ABAQUS, to model the ground waves. Slip elements and material and geometric attenuation would be required. The performance of each method would then be evaluated against site data, for both impact and vibratory hammers.
