Summary on Grant Application Form
The work concerns the drying of cement mortars and gypsum plasters on absorbing backgrounds. Measurement of fundamental characterising hydraulic parameters and their mathematical modelling by unsaturated flow theory will lead to a better understanding of the physical/chemical process of setting. Causes of failure and the relevance of standard test procedures derive from the study. New and established experimental techniques for assessing sorptive properties will be used supported by microscopy and tomography. The work is supported from within the construction industry and from outside it and will have application to other engineering areas.
