Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will purchase a FEG TEM/STEM with an energy loss filter and use this for the development of the understanding of property/structure relationships for a range of materials problems of scientific interest and industrial promise. The approach we will take requires the correlation of quantitative nanoscale data on both local structure and bonding. The JEOL 2010F with a GATAN GIF is the optimal instrument to use for this purpose. The materials areas we will be working on include: alloy development, interface control, the anomalous properties of multilayers, semiconductor material and structures design, dielectrics, and metal/ceramic and ceramic composites. Our correlations of structures and bonding at the new levels allowed by the microscope will set the standard for the 21st century in the use of nanoscale characterisation for the quantitative development of materials properties.
