Summary on Grant Application Form
This project addresses the overall theme of nanostructured materials, in which we seek to develop novel synthetic routes to produce better materials, for use in fabrication of optoelectronic devices based on semiconductor quantum dots; new catalysts based on metal-filled carbon nanotubes; new structural ceramic materials; new magnetic recording media derived from metallic multilayers, and oxide based optical storage media. The successful development of these and other new materials requires a clear understanding of the factors controlling their novel properties; for this we propose to install a new electron microscope facility which will provide simultaneous atomic structure imaging, chemical microanalysis and accurate electron diffraction, all from sub-nanometre areas. Since this is the scale on which we are designing and fabricating new structures, this level of characterisation is essential for the planned improvements in the processing of these materials. We also propose to set up the microscope as an analytical facility to which outside users will have access.
