Summary on Grant Application Form |
The principal objective of the ROSES project is the design and construction of miniature robust prototype communications space switches capable of being used in systems trials. The emphasis of the contribution of KCL to the achievement of this objective is on space switch architectures which use SLMs in transmission and which incorporate innovative ideas for exceptionally low cross talk. KLC will design initially a 1:4 switch and then 1:16 and 4:4 (or larger) switches for implementation and trials by the industrial partners. This principally involves KCL with work on hologram and optical design and assessment with strong inputs into packaging technology (with TS) SLM VLSI design (with CUED) and beat noise studies (with BNR). The outputs of this work in combination with the outputs from the work of TS, CUED/CRL and BAe (SLM fabrication and opto-mechanics) will provide the generic technology for switches with: very low crosstalk/minimal coherent scattering; very short devices giving high stability; inbuilt power control; relaxed alignment sensitivity.
