Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our aim is to develop efficient methods for the formation of transient nitrile selenides, and to explore the fundamental chemistry of this uncharted functional group. This proposal addresses new and challenging areas of organo-selenium chemistry, notably the synthesis of compounds possessing N-Se bonds which will undoubtedly be highly reactive. In the light of our recent experience with thionitroso (RN=S) and selenonitroso compounds (RN-Se). We believe we are uniquely placed to explore the chemistry proposed herein. We are not aware of any systematic attempts to generate nitrile selenides. The precedent in studying heteroatoms in unusual valence states is that new and unexpected reactions will be uncovered. Cycloadditions of nitrile selenides should provide unique access to a range of C/N/Se heterocycles. We will explore the possibility that R-C=N+Se- species may form stable transition metal complexes. Throughout this work particular attention will be paid to the influence of the substituent group R on the stability and reactivity of R-C=N+Se-.
