Summary on Grant Application Form
Dichroic ladders comprise a series of textile samples, varying in colour slightly from one to the other, dyed with metal complex dyes so they are reasonably colour constant. A sample called a 'floater' is prepared with acid levelling dyes which are less colour constant and is dyed such that it will match one of the samples of the ladder under a given light source (not necessarily the same sample for all light sources). Initial experiments have indicated that the sample from the ladder selected visually as a match to the floater does not agree with that predicted instrumentally on the basis of colour-difference calculation. It is intended to extend this work by preparing many more ladders and a number of floaters for each ladder will be prepared. The relationship between visual and instrumentally selected matching samples will be investigated, and correction algorithms established to improve the correlation.
