The equipment applied for will be used on two projects forming part of a comprehensive programme of integrated studies, undertaken jointly with Ricardo Consulting Engineers and aimed at providing an in-depth understanding of the various factors and processes influencing the performance of direct injection gasoline engines.A number of these studies have already started and include the use of laser flow visualisation and PIV measurement to characterise in-cylinder flows during the induction stroke. The test data is used to validate and provide the initial conditions for CFD predictions of these flows. In parallel, CFD models are being developed for the prediction of gasoline sprays. Measurements of the properties of these sprays in a simple bomb are needed for the validation of these models. Measurements of flow in a motored optical Hydra using LDV techniques are also required to provide the characteristics of the flow during the compression stroke for different geometries, and to validate CFD predictions of such flows. These measurements will be carried out at Brighton. Finally, the results of these studies will be evaluated against engine tests, currently being carried out at Ricardo, to examine the interaction of the above studies and the effect of the various design parameters on the overall engine performance.
