It is proposed to upgrade an existing tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer by the incorporation of a collision surface, associated ion optics, and an additional quadrupole analyser. The new instrument will provide significantly enhanced capabilities for tandem mass spectrometry by accessing high energy fragmentation pathways and by providing more precise definition of the collisional activation event. Furthermore, retention of existing capabilities for ion activation by collision with gas atoms will allow a direct comparison with conventional collisional activation methods. The instrument will be the first of its kind and the proposal therefore represents a joint venture with the manufacturer, Micromass UK Ltd, who are making substantial contributions to cover the cost of the project. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS) with surface induced decomposition (SID) will be used in a variety of applications which reflect the established broad collaborative programme of the Centre for Mass Spectrometry at UMIST. Thus, for example, electrospray ionisation and tandem MS/SID will be used in our programme of gas-phase ion chemistry and for the characterisation of enzymatic hydrolysates of complex modified proteins. A major collaboration will be pursued with the ICI Wilton Research Centre in the development of improved methods for the structural analysis of surfactants, paints, polyesters and acrylics.
