Summary on Grant Application Form
A BAe/EPSRC collaborative research grant (GR/J86902) has been successfully completed on the unsteady aerodynamics of novel wing planforms. The programme developed novel manufacturing and measurement techniques which enabled the unsteady aerodynamic loading to be acquired on a variety of novel wing planforms. By correlating the results with those from steady CFD it is proposed that the combination of steady numerical predictions and empirical representations of the loading spectra can be used early in the design cycle to predict full scale aerodynamic dynamic loads. The Principle Investigator (Dr N J Wood) has been appointed as Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester. It is proposed to combine as assessment of the data quality by repeating the wind tunnel experiments on the existing wing planforms, in the University of Manchester 9ft x 7ft wind tunnel and to extend the capability to larger models more suited to the higher dynamic pressure range of that tunnel. This will form the foundation for a research proposal as part of the next managed programme which will consider the final development of the design process which includes correlation with actual flight test data.
