Semiconductor quantum microactivities (QMCs) constitute a highly topical area of research covering a variety of related areas including exciton and electrodynamics, quantum optics and crystal growth. The importance of QMCs arises from the ability control the electronic states, the electromagnetic field and the coupling between them, in a single semiconductor structure. The emphasis of the present proposal is the study of new physical phenomena in such structures, two of the topics in addition having significant potential for new light emitting diode or laser applications. The aim is to advance QMC physics into several new areas including the coupling of electronic states by photon fields, the creation of in-plane photon band structures by lateral patterning, study of motional narrowing phenomena by angle tuning, the investigation of polariton relaxation processes by photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, and the properties of quantum dots in microcavities.
