Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to investigate the means by which plasma boundaries in gas discharges can be modified by the introduction of beam electrons. Existing models of edge plasmas suggest that the flux and energy of ions at a material boundary can be independently controlled by modifying the electron energy distribution function. We shall establish a flexible experimental facility to validate and extend current models of boundary physics in plasmas and beams. The study will address fundamental issues, particularly an investigation into regimes where no sheath is predicted to form. The work will also lend understanding to plasma sources in which anisotropic or fast electron components are intrinsically present (for example, many industrial discharges). Ultimately it may provide a new technique for industry for the control and modification of processing plasma boundaries.
