Summary on Grant Application Form |
High permittivity, low loss dielectric ceramics based on BaO-Nd2O3-TiO2 (BNTO) are key components in wireless communications systems including mobile phones and satellite TV's. To exploit these materials fully in existing and emerging markets demands a fundamental understanding of the factors controlling properties. Characterisation of BNTO materials prepared with powders of different 'quality' will define tolerance levels in impurities and processing conditions to ensure consistency of dielectric properties, Q values and high temperature stability. Once established, local microstructural and property measurements will be carried out on clean and selectivity doped single crystal, bicrystal and hipped polycrystals (using REBIC, Impedance Spectroscopy, TEM and STEM) to identify property limiting effects in the bulk and at grain boundaries. Microwave dielectric properties of sintered ceramics and single crystals will be determined at temperatures up to 800oC to yield dispersion parameters and information on lattice vibrations. High resolution X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction will be used to define structures for simulation studies and investigate a likely phase transition. Static simulation and mesoscopic modelling will be used to interpret anharmonic interactions and predict structures, dielectric properties and the location of additives.
