Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will be aimed principally at achieving a large spot size single-mode vertical cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) capable of being operated stably at high output powers. A novel approach, the Bragg waveguide structure, will be applied to the design of such devices. Bragg waveguides have the property of supporting a single fundamental mode in a core of arbitrary dimension and refractive index vale. By engineering the conventional VCSEL to incorporate a transverse Bragg waveguide, single mode operation should be achieved for a large-spot size device with good mode control and excellent output beam quality. Theory, modelling and design work will be carried out at Essex and device fabrication and assessment will take place at Sheffield. The industrial collaborators, BT and HP, will provide an industrial steer and access to test facilities not available at the universities. As a secondary theme, the feasibility of fabricating a self-pulsating VCSEL, based on a dispersive Q-switching will be assessed both theoretically and experimentally. Such a device would have a wide range of potential applications in CD players, in all-optical communications networks and in microwave optoelectronics.
