Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research addresses tow important aspects of FRC development, i.e., enhanced CAD/CAM and moulding analysis of 3D woven preforms. The enhanced CAD/CAM is a continuation of the previous research (GR.H91992), which developed a flattening technique to enable the production of certain 3D woven preforms on conventional looms and a CAD/CAM tool for generating weaving instructions. It is proposed to continue the work for generating 3D preforms with variable cross section, employing various weave structures and densities. The structural distortion during opening-up will also be investigated. The proposed moulding analysis tool van be used in designing 3D preforms produced through flattening process, and in analyzing the mouldability of the preforms to desired complex shapes. The main tasks involved in this aspect are: development of a tool for geometric transformation of desired shapes to the nearest weavable shapes; development of moulding analysis software utilizing fabric mechanical properties and micro-structures. The outcome of the research will be demonstrated by weaving various components of an aircraft sear.
