Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to measure the magnetic dichroism in photoemission at the core levels of 3d transition metal and rare earth thin films using the circularly and linearly polarised x-rays from beamlines 1.1 and 5U.1 of the SRS Daresbury and beamline 26 of the ESRF Grenoble. The aim is to obtain new insight in the influence of layer composition, thickness and morphology on the electronic and magnetic structure of these materials. The dichroism signal can be used to determine the spin and orbital components of the element specific magnetic moments in the ground state, and its study will enable us to answer many questions about the origin of phenomena which are currently of fundamental and technological importance, such as giant megnetoresistance, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, enhanced magnetic moments, exchange biasing, oscillatory interlayer and exchange coupling, and quantum-well states. The microscopic magnetic properties will be correlated with the structural parameters obtained by high resolution low-energy electron diffraction (HRLEED) and medium-energy ion scattering (MEIS).
