Avoiding unnecessary air conditioning is important for reducing energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases. This may be achieved by ventilation (particularly natural ventilation) or a mixed mode air conditioning syste. Building designers and the CIDSE Wind Data Task Group are concerned at the lack of suitable wind data for the summer design condition of warm sunny weather.In the UK climate warm sunny weather generally occurs with low wind speeds; it is believed that fluctuations in the wind may cause wind-driven ventilation to be greater than predicted by hourly mean models. There is a lack of suitable data because the Met. Office's standard instrumentation is not designed to measure low wind speeds or high frequency fluctuation in the wind.The aims of the research are to improve the knowledge of low speed winds and high frequency fluctuations in the wind, particularly as they affect the wind-driven ventilation systems in the summer.
