Summary on Grant Application Form
The IRC in Biomedical Materials has a focused, multi-disciplinary research programme to establish the conceptual base for a second generation of implant materials with enhanced lifetimes in medical and dental applications. Research in the IRC is organised to progress from the innovation of novel biomaterials to the associated mechanical and biological evaluation and subsequently through the design of implant prototypes to patient clinical trials. A major theme is the introduction of analogue materials for tissue replacement which mimic the natural properties and produce a stable tissueimplant interface. Projected clinical applications are in orthopaedic, opthalmic, cardiovascular and dental devices.
