The problems addressed by this project are multi-channel acoustic echo control (AEC) and noise reduction (NR) on speech signals. These are important problems in applications of audio and video conferencing where users expect high quality stereo digital audio. The project will target two applications: professional video conferencing and multimedia PCs. Existing algorithms for AEC are ineffective in the multi-channel case whereas, for NR, some promising algorithms are available but need further development to achieve their potential. Much recent interest has been shown in this subject area both in the scientific literature and in commercial activity. The two main focuses of the project are (1) to investigate, develop and evaluate a novel multi-channel AEC algorithm and (2) to enhance and optimise an approach already developed by the investigators for NR. This will lead to an integrated speech enhancement technology for stereo conferencing systems. The work will begin with some quantitative investigations of the state-of-the-art. An evaluation methodology will be developed and used to select a reference system against for evaluation of further developments. Algorithmic work will be carried out and evaluated within the commercial context of the two application areas of interest.
