The investigation deals with the behaviour of large diameter tanks founded at depth in saturated soil, subjected to buoyany forces. The research output will be the provision of appropriate computer code to incorporated into commercially available software along with explicit design guidance to enable the innovative design and construction of buoyancy resistant structures. The investigation will include state of the art 3D numerical analysis of the soil-structure interaction wilth large diameter shallow founded tanks, with and without buoyancy-resistant elements, to predict behaviour at both servicability and ultimate limit state. The soil-structure behaviour including stress paths to the ultimate limit state and mechanisms of breakout will be validated by centrifuge modelling at 1/100 scale.The study will extend to the analysis of flexible tanks founded on hetrogeneous soil beds of variable density. Once the soil response to the buoyancy-induced forces on the tank has been simulated nemerically and validated by centifuge modelling, the soil model will be appropriately simplified so that it may be usedin commercially available finite element software which will incorporate more comprehensive structual analysis.
