Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal described a study to develop procedures for assessment of residual stress effects on the structural integrity of welded joints. Residual stresses can have a very detrimental effect and are an important consideration in the defect assessent of offshore, power plant and other structures. The procedures currently used to incorporate residual stress effects can be very conservative ofr as-welded specimens. This programme wwill attempt to address some of these conservatismes and to establish guidlines for the treatment of residual stresses in failure assessments. The programme involoves the measurement of residual stresses in as0welded and post-welded heat treated T-butt and tubular joints using neutorn diffraction and mechanical techniques (eg sectioning and hole drilling). The effect of the induced residual stress wil then be quantified by finite element calcuations andfracture mechanics tests. The finite element analysis will determain the J, CTOD and constraint (Q/T) for the specimens and assess the effect of residual stress on these quantities. Three point becnd trests will be carries out to determine the fracture toughness of the as-welded and hreat-treated specimens. Results will be incorporated into existing failure assessment procedures, PD 6493 and R6.
